POLITOYS

anniecrabtree:

Edition 1: ‘WALLS’

The smallest common divider

The art project POLITOYS reduces politically symbolic objects to their shape in reduced size and thereby trivializes them as toys.

The first objects are dividing wall segments and are based on intense research on existing spatial divisions worldwide.

POLITOYS is not about the concrete political issues themselves nor about specific history but about the metaphor, the form, the symbolism the objects represent and how they affect the lives of people living in their shadows - on both sides.

The project is not intended to judge but focuses on this manifestation of unsolved religious and social problems between people and the far-reaching consequences for everyone involved.
What are the needs and hopes that people on both sides of the wall have? Who decides where the wall stands, for how long and who profits from it in which ways? These are some of the questions the project tries to raise.

Through the “played down” manifestations these issues become comprehensible and conceptional even in other parts of the world. The walls enter our home, our awareness, instead of being looked at from afar through news media - they become real.

Just like the real wall modules are mass products, POLITOYS are ready-mades that “play down” what the originals stand for and are available in an online shop like toys, mixing political object, commerce, art and toy, each of these dimensions contrasting the others.

Thanks Annie!
